Fin De Semana! 8-7-15

The contents of a wallet lost in WWII and recently returned to it’s owner.

What happened to the U.S. Camel Cavalry?

Quite possibly the least encouraging movie news in a while.

What I’m Listening To:

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats-“S.O.B.”

It starts off with a kinda Speedoo doo wop hum and just when you settle into that Nathaniel explodes into a hearty “Son of a Bitch!” complete with a swinging soul band horn section and towards the end gets to an impassioned gospel sorta vocal breakdown. And then the credits roll and you see that magic logo so many good records from guys like Chuck Berry in days past: Stax Records. Needless to say, I’m really into this song.

What I’m Drinking

San Patricio- The magic combination of Irish Whiskey, Lime Juice and Topo Chico that makes triple digit afternoon hear bearable.

Hard to believe that in the 21st Century we’re still doing this. Shame on you, John McCain.

Something I’ve been curious about: How the Iran deal might affect one of Texas’ signature industries.

With U.S.-Cuba relations normalizing, New Mexico would like to get their hands on a fugitive who has been living on the island.

What I’m Listening To/Drinking

Trying to dig up this Country/Exotica record from Biller and Horton for drinking mojitos on the back porch tonight with my wife. Have a good weekend!

A quick one, since we’re headed to higher, cooler climes for the weekend.

An older article I stumbled across this weekend about German Native American hobbyists. I find it equally parts charming and odd.

Some “dirty secrets” about barbecue. Mostly about the market and demographic features that affect our favorite spread of smoked meats. I’m particularly drawn to the point that barbecue comes from a place and a culture, not a recipe and smoker.

Some tidbits about Lonesome Dove, best served as a shot to this chaser.

I’m a finalist to represent El Paso on the Texas Taco Council. Super excited.

Speaking of El Paso, we had a UFO sighting.

On the heels (pun intended) of his talk about Mexico, Donald Trump gets an invitation to learn more about the border.

What I’m Listening To

The new Turnpike Troubadours song, which is a sneak preview of the self-titled album they’ve got coming in September. Find it here. I like the Troubadours because they’ve got an accessible, catchy, and essentially good-natured take on country. This song is no different and I’m really hoping this next album blows up and makes them huge(r). Listen here.

What I’m Drinking

A guest brought a bottle of this to our 4th of July cookout. I don’t normally like IPAs but damned if this one wasn’t smooth and not so hoppy it burned all your taste buds off. I guess they’re only for the 4th, so they might be hard to come by. Since the crisp, clear freshness of the beer is what made it so drinkable, it might be worth waiting until next 4th to pick up a new one. I know I’ll be keeping an eye out.

Not a whole lot going on this week, but here’s some quality America Jams for you!

A Colorado Sheriff’s department is changing their uniform to look less militaristic. This has been experimented with in the past, with middling results. Personally, I like this western-styled uniform. I think it makes a fine middle ground between being approachable and authoritative and it matches the style of the community. I think a lot of the current stormtrooper-ninja uniforms start every encounter off on the wrong foot for both officer and civilian.

The single most country headline you’ll ever read.

Drought might ruin the next jar of salsa or burrito you eat.

What I’m Listening To

Mike and the Moonpies played here Wednesday. Because I enjoy country music I was watching them be awesome and not watching the CMT Awards. They’ve got a new album out soon. Keep an eye out for it.

What I’m Drinking

A protein shake. It’s either work out harder or buy new jeans. My jeans are perfectly broken in right now, so off to the gym I go.

Back when El Paso was a rough town full of pistoleros and Juarez was calm.

Eh, it’s monsoon season anyway.

Whataburger soldiers through the egg shortage.

What I’m Listening To:

Man, is it good to have Dwight back.

What I’m Drinking

Shiner Light Blonde- It’s the light American lager from Texas’ favorite brewery! It tastes pretty much like “cheap beer!” Sometimes, when it’s really hot, that’s all you want! Listen! Whataburger cut back breakfast, Blue Bell is off the market, I was worried about Shiner! It’s going to be ok! It really is!

Tex-Mex in the Big Apple? Apparently not going so well. I love a snarky restaurant review.

Active duty soldier survives two tours in Iraq, only to die mysteriously in the El Paso Jail.

Slow West is getting mostly positive reviews. When (if) it plays here I’ll definitely be seeing it. Fun fact: it was written and directed by a member of the Beta Band (from that scene in the movie High Fidelity)

What I’m Listening To

Has anyone heard The Rose of Roscrae yet? I’m curious. It’s a folk opera set in the old west. I collect those. (Yeah, there’s enough of them to collect.) It has a sprawling cast and the story seems interesting.

What I’m Drinking

As far as “cheap beers” go, I’ll always be partial to Coors Banquet Beer. Now it’s in stubby bottles which has absolutely no bearing on the taste whatsoever. There’s nothing like pulling a Coors out of an iced down cooler and drinking it next to a mesquite fire. Or, on your back porch. But seriously, next to the fire is best.

Banh mi on Cinco De Mayo.

The story of a bizarre murder in Big Bend NP.

Like tacos? Thank the Ottoman Empire.

Probably the sanest piece on Jade Helm

What I’m Listening To

Chris Stapleton-Traveller

This album is really good. I hate how everyone throws the word “soulful” around when ever someone throws a little flair into their vocals. When something genuinely soulful, like this record, comes around it makes it hard to describe it. Do you like music where the singer is really putting it all out there and the musicians are busting ass to make the music sound good? This is one o those records. Before everyone started trying to oversing like third rate Mariahs this is what we called soulful.

What I’m Drinking

An Arnold Palmer. Half iced tea, half lemonade. So good in hot weather. Good luck getting a decent refill though.

Jade Helm has everyone riled up.

Steve McQueen died in Juarez, in possession of Billy Graham’s Bible. If that’s not America…

Native American actors walk off your movie in protest of demeaning jokes? Break out the bronzer and make your extras faces brown!

What I’m Listening To

The O’s

We (Mrs. Cultwestern and I) got to see the O’s this week. It’s amazing how much music two guys can make. And what music! Banjos and steel guitar and fast paced playing that manages to be both expansive and toe-tapping. Also, they’re really hilarious between songs. I hope they come back soon.

What I’m Drinking

It’s the first warm, sunny day. Perfect summer weather. Better drink some sweet tea before it becomes brutally hot.
