Sturgill Simpson’s “High Top Mountain” was one of my favorite country records of last year. In any genre. “High Top Mountain” was pretty traditional, straight forward country. The new album, “Meta Modern Sounds In Country Music” looks to be taking a different tack. Specifically a tack about psychedelics and lizard aliens made of light. It’s a risky move, but he seems unfazed by the difficulties of getting trad country fans into Terance McKenna territory. Simpson sings with such conviction and his instincts are so dead on, I’m willing to make the leap. It certainly beats more bro country songs about trucks.
